This is for the kids who grew up too fast The ones who had to stop their parents from fighting Who learned how to fill the silence  When they wouldn’t speak to one another Who tried with everything their tiny hearts had To keep their family together and happy This is for the kids who had to police themselves and their siblings Because their parents were absent, asleep, or preoccupied  Who never learned how to ask for help Because there was never anyone to give it This is for the kids that can’t process their emotions Because they always had to hold them inside The children who were rarely seen and never heard The ones who always hear “you’re mature for your age" And shrug it off because it was never a choice   This is to the younger me, who always put everyone before herself We made it. We are free. We are hurting and healing at the same time.  We will never have those childhood days back But the future is finally an option An opportunity to live for ourselves
